Potash for chickens

Well we're getting ready to start getting our first bouts of cooler weather and for many their starting to think about their fireplaces and wood burning stoves.

Well this year don't waste that medicinal dust your getting ready to just throw out. Yes I said medicinal. Believe it or not you're throwing out a electrolyte replacer , calcium and potassium replinishment as well as a insect and pest control.

First of all you can add it to a chicken's or duck"s water and give them a great source of potassium (k+) and calcium (Ca+);. To add it add in 1% of the potash to the feed or water but no more. Because the grubs, worms and insects begin to run scarce this time of year the chickens and ducks source begins to run low. So just to give them a bit of a boost add in the potash.

Secondly the potash can be added in to the dust bathing areas to have the ducks and chickens ( mostly chickens dust bath) that will help kill off mites , fleas and ticks. For the most part it actually smoothers them out. You can combine it with diatomaceous earth or DE to really get more bang for your buck💰.

You do want to make sure and use only natural wood ash and don't throw in charcoal or other materials that could have chemicals added in and therefore be hazardous for their health. Even if things like lighter fluid or other petroleum based products were used this is not a very good idea.

So set you a good storage bin aside for this purpose and add in your ash from your fireplace or wood burning stoves and don't see the ash as a chore to be removed on a regular basis but gathering up free electrolyte replacement and insect control . Now get those fires đŸ”„burning. 🐓🩆
