Raising a PET hog

You know before jumping on the ride you may want to consider quite a few things first.

A pet is a much bigger consideration than just a livestock animal for meat. With livestock you're only going to have to care for it a much shorter period of time and with much less long term considerations. So just remember you're going to be in it for the long haul. And a haul it is going to be.

Next what breed of hog do you want. Well space is going to be a pretty big factor. If you have lots of space then the field is wide open and just go crazy. But the reason I say space of course is size and that's a much bigger factor. With larger breeds of hogs the issue of control and safety come into play. Do you have smaller children around ? A large hog at the very least can be unpredictable and if the small child or even a larger child decides to " play " with the pet hog and does the wrong thing making the hog angry it could very easily end up in a bad situation.

Feed is the other consideration in that the larger the breed the more feed it will take and man could that really become expensive. Smaller breed , smaller feed bill.

Last but not least is the breed in regard to temperament. There are a very wide range of opinions on this subject but for the most part the very best options for keeping as " Pets" are two breeds . The American Guinea Hog and the kinekune hogs. Both are smaller breeds and both have very good dispositions . As far as the differences in the two that's for a future blog. But if you were wondering that should at least get you started on the right track.
