The Heat

These temperatures are getting a bit dicey. Now in the past two to three days we've had heat indexes of up to 112 degrees. Now some out in the west may say that's not that big of a deal. But the west doesn't have the oppressive humidity that we do in the southeast and unless you've experienced it, it's very hard to get across the dangers associated.

We all know about heat exhaustion and worse heat stroke. Well at least we do in humans . Not to many apply the same logic to their livestock outside in it. The usual excuses include but aren't limited to , well they're used to it , they're made to handle it. The truth is they are just as predisposed to heat related injuries as we are , in some cases moreso.

The signs and symptoms can very from species to species and vary widely on their adaptability and reserve . In some instances the animal appears completely normal until it's way too late and die quickly thereafter.

The key to all of this isn't so much so as to be able to recognize the early warning signs in the all of the species you currently are responsible for taking care of , although that is a good thing to know , the key is prevention. In humans as well as livestock across the board.

First have them a location out of the direct heat and sun. Any shade you can provide them helps out tremendously.

Second keep in mind just because they're inside a coop , barn etc doesn't mean they're completely safe. Sometimes when a barn sits with no air movement it can trap heat making it 5-20 degrees hotter than outside. Make sure you have adequate air movement. If you have to put in to put in temporary fans just to keep the air moving.

Third providing your livestock with electrolytes in their water can make a world of difference.

Fourth don't apply ACV to the animals waters during time of extreme heat . Vinegar and heat don't mix very well and can in fact speed up or contribute to heat related injuries.

These are pretty simple things but can be the difference in life or death. One thing to keep in mind also is once an animal or human for that matter suffers a heat related injury they are much more likely and much more easily going to suffer a heat related injury.
