After reading all of the issues with supply and demand especially with Covid-19 issues surrounding that problem many of the things that are staples are even in shortage right now or are getting there. Not to mention with everyone that handles those items in the distribution process it's a much safer and more reliable to grow or process everything you can on your own.
So one recent thing to come under question is sugar . Now whether you use it in baking , cooking or making delicious treats or drinks this is absolutely a needed staple in anyone's home. If it gets limited like so many other items in your local store this may create issues. It might not be a bad idea to start planning out other ways to produce some.
So after looking into safe , reasonable alternatives the one that I think may be feasible would be growing sugar cane. With everything I've read it doesn't seem to be finicky or problematic. Short grow time , it reproduces itself and you could propogate as much as you wanted.
The processing does seem a little time hungry but anything with value is. My momma always told me you reap what you sow, and not only was she right existentially but literally as well.
Now after the consideration I think my next planting experiment is going to be sugar cane. As far as the benefit only time will tell but not only will it be interesting but a fun project. Hopefully we'll get some nice product out of it as well and once planted it should continue to produce year after year. 😁
